LAWRENCE — The Lawrence City Council's Ordinance Committee tabled a plan to honor former Councilor Nilka Alvarez Rodriguez with a Tremont Street dedication, sending it to the city attorney for review. Chair Anna Levy, Vice Chair Franklin Miguel and Councilor Selena Reyes voted 3-0 on every matter Monday; Councilor Gregory Del Rosario was absent throughout. Richard Rodriguez told the committee "Tremont Street is a very strong connection," describing the family's decades-long ties to the block.
Inspection Services Director Pat Ruiz and Police Captain Ariel Montez faced questions over a backlog of unanswered resident requests, with Reyes estimating 85 percent await responses from the city engineer or DPW rather than police. The committee cleared eight handicap-parking ordinances, approving five for public hearings and withdrawing two after police found the applicants had private driveways, then pushed nearly a dozen 2025 resident-parking petitions, including for Marmot, Bromfield and Albion streets, on to the full council.
