Finance Panel Rejects Mayor's Clerk Fix
Lawrence's Budget and Finance Committee sent a mayoral request to restore a data entry clerk position back to the full council with an unfavorable recommendation.
Finance Committee · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Lawrence's Budget and Finance Committee sent a mayoral request to restore a data entry clerk position back to the full council with an unfavorable recommendation. Officials admitted the position was moved to the Department of Public Works without first clearing it with the clerical union, SEIU, prompting Vice Chair Vivian Marmol to say she felt "misled" by recurring budget-season oversights. The committee separately recommended, 3-0, a $600,000 transfer to cover retroactive pay under a new three-year contract with IAFF Local 146 firefighters, which raises wages 7.5 percent over three years and boosts EMT and medical stipends.
Councilor Mark LaPlante said his only question was "do we have the money." The panel also voted to seek a written city attorney opinion before approving $10,000 in handicap-parking fine revenue to co-sponsor the 14th Annual Lawrence City Theatre Festival, after LaPlante questioned whether the funds could lawfully go to a private nonprofit. Council President Giovanni Rodriguez was absent for every vote.
